Emaan Reading series update
--
"Truly, it is in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest" (Quran 13:28)
The Eemaan Reading Series
The Eemaan Reading Series is a pioneering effort aimed at establishing an educationally sound and visually attractive collection of graded English readers with Islamic moral content for the primary school level (ages 4-12). Some schools also use the books to teach akhlaaq (ethics and character) through stories about Muslim children having to make moral choices from which they learn and grow. This series was first started in 1996 under the inspiration and supervision of Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips and since its starting, the series has grown to include Levels PK (Pre-Kindergarden), K1 (Lower Kindergarden), K2 (Upper Kindergarden), 1 & 2 (Grade 1), 3 & 4 (Grade 2) and 6 (Grade 3). The series is currently being used by many English Medium Islamic schools world-wide. This series is available in the United Kingdom through Al-Hidaayah. The cost of each reader is $ 3.50 or £ 2.00 and the cost of each workbook is $ 4.00 or £ 2.50. |

Pizza in his Pocket - English Nasheed
Did you ever hear about the boy
Who ate and ate and ate!
He ate early in the morning
And he ate when it was late.
But he didn't thank Allah for all the yummy food he had
And he ate so much it made him sick!
Which really made him sad.
He ate dates in Damascus, which he thought were very nice.
And hot samoosas in Sumatra, seasoned with a special spice.
He had tacos in Tijuana with some sauce he got from Spain
And a bowl of fresh bakalava that he bartered in Bahrain.
He said gyros made in Cairo are a taste that can't be beat,
And the lemonade in Yemen made a very special treat.
But the turkey made in Turkey
Could still use a pinch of salt.
If you ever visit Malta, you should
Have a chocolate malt!
He had pizza in his pocket, he had ketchup on his shirt,
And he bought an ice-cream sundae, so he wouldn't miss dessert.
He had pizza in his pocket, he had ketchup on his shirt,
And he bought an ice-cream sundae, so he wouldn't miss dessert.
On a bay in the Bahamas,
He ate bon-bons in a bunch.
And then he rushed back
Home so he could make it
Just in time for lunch!
Then one day he saw a little girl, who held her tummy tight,
And he walked over and asked her if everything was alright.
She said she was so hungry and had been hungry for so long,
Then he realized the way he ate was very very wrong.
He looked down at his own tummy and he started feeling pain-
Pain from eating too much food, but he knew not to complain.
So he brought the girl some food, shared it with her family,
Then they thanked Allah for what they had, and then he let them be.
So let's try to learn a lesson and let's try to do what's right.
Eat the food your parents give you without a fuss or fight.
Always be thankful to Allah for all your yummy food,
Share what you have with others, because not sharing is rude.
Being thankful is what's really great.
Eat the veggies on your plate.
And don't be like the boy who always ate and ate and ate!
He had pizza in his pocket, he had ketchup on his shirt,
And he bought an ice-cream sundae, so he wouldn't miss dessert.

And he bought an ice-cream sundae, so he wouldn't miss dessert.

The Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round Song | Children songs by Cullen's Abc's
Assalamu alaikum,
Here is one of the video resources that my wife and I used to teach the kids. These are called action songs and are a part of a series called Cullen's ABC's, designed to help kids understand simple concepts, as you will see in the videos.
Note: For those brothers who may feel that it is not appropriate to use resources that expose their kids to a non-muslim woman who is not modestly dressed as per Islamic standards, you could get the wife to see it and teach the kids.In fact, this would also stop your kids from sitting in front of the computer screen for long periods which could be harmful for their development and creativity.Lastly, they will benefit from interacting with a real person which is way superior to any educational toy, electronic or otherwise.
wassalamualaikum,
Abu Maryam

Buying Educational Resources
In the comments section of this post each one of us can improve on the set of questions by adding things that are important to Muslims.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most home educators feel compelled to buy specific curriculum materials, and nearly all of us fall prey to advertising that sings the praises of particular learning toys or educational aids. The truth is we don't need any of those things to encourage our children to learn, but it's nice to have a few, well-chosen and effective items. I've never believed the myth that learning has to be fun. Children learn for all sorts of reasons. If a child is engaged and interested in a topic, or wants to do or build something, then that child will be motivated to learn. Don't make the mistake of dividing life into `play' and `work' – help your children understand that work can be fun too and that play can be work: it's all learning!
The following set of questions can be helpful in determining the value of curriculum resources and materials, educational aids and toys:
* Does it comprehensively serve a definite purpose (need)?
* Is the item or program complete, or do you have to buy future instalments or components?
* Is it comprehensive; does it cover all the elements you need?
* Does it integrate with other subject areas?
* Does it include a carefully planned or sequenced development?
* Is the context at the child's existing levels of understanding or skills?
* Will the content extend the child's understanding and skills or does it simply reinforce current ones?
* Is it open-ended, or limited in its application? Can they use it for other purposes than the main intention?
* Can you use it again for other children?
* Will it communicate, and make sense, to the children (and adult!)?
* Does the material include useful teaching/learning aids?
* How willing will you be to spend time with the material – is the information and guidelines clear and easy to implement?
* Is it really better than something else – have you checked out other resources, including existing knowledge and materials already on hand?
* Does it use un-biased language?
* Does it foster independent exploration?
* Is it the kind of thing that will be used often, or will it sit unused on the shelf?
* Is it recyclable?
Home educators tend to use and adapt ideas they've seen work elsewhere and some even make their own `student workbooks', ducational games and aids. In addition to being tailored to the learning need at hand the children can have input into the making process, thus learning or practicing valuable skills in many curriculum areas. It's easy to fall prey to the prevalent cultural belief that learning must be fun, or to peer pressure from other families to buy the latest whiz-bang educational toy or game. Advertising and attractive packaging are designed to convince us that our children need these products to progress educationally. It pays to look out look for simple and inexpensive alternatives, or to make them at home. The money saved can then be spent on something of real value that you wouldn't normally be able to afford.

Teach Your Children At Home!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You won't be alone.
Many Australian families choose to educate their children at home. Homeschooling is both rewarding and enjoyable.
You don't need any special educational qualifications to teach your children at home. People from all backgrounds successfully teach their children -- people with university degrees, trade certificates, small business owners, factory workers, people working from home, mums, dads - everyone has the ability to teach their children at home!
The only qualification you need is LOVE for your children. Do you qualify? Yes!
Schools can't, and don't, love your children. They can care for them, look after them and teach them, but the essential successful ingredient in home education is love.
Love brings success to every learning situation.
From the love you offer your children will come the responsibility, commitment and drive to continuously strive for the best education available for your children. Your life-long dedication to your children's health and happiness will drive you to seek out best and most appropriate resources and to facilitate excellent quality learning opportunities and activities for your children. You, too, will become a life-long, passionate learner!
Home education is grounded in love and commitment. A parent's love for a child. A child's love for his or her parent. This is a solid foundation to grow educational success upon.
Do you want to know more?
Are you interested in building strong, enduring and respectful family relationships? Are you interested in becoming involved in healthy, active and interested communities, dedicated to promoting the educational opportunities and well being of not only children, but adults too?
This web site is packed with information about how you and your family can explore the world of homeschooling. You'll find lots of great ideas and tips to help you navigate your way easily into a happy home learning environment.
Homeschooling is empowering!
Become personally involved in your children's education. Be there to mark those special learning moments. To share in the delight of discovery. To guide your child through the trials and tribulations of childhood. The excitement, the awe, the anticipation, the wonder.
Teach your children at home today!
